LISBON 1497: THE PERFUME THAT EVOKES VASCO DA GAMA'S DEPARTURE FOR INDIA

Lemon, bergamot, lime, amber and cedar are some of the aromas in this new fragrance.

‘Lisbon, 29 May 2024 - The departure into the unknown, fear, but also hope! The challenges of the sea, the courage of the discoverers, but also the longings...

On 8 July 1497, a fleet commanded by Vasco da Gama set sail from Restelo towards India. That morning in Lisbon, the air is filled with the scent of warm weather. The tears of the family members who remain mingle with floral aromas, but the departing fleet's ambition is to bring back other smells by establishing Portuguese trade in the Indian Ocean for the famous spices.

Vasco da Gama successfully carries out the task of sending pepper, cinnamon, ginger, saffron, nutmeg and cloves, known as the gold of India, to Portugal and Europe, but deep down he wanted to return and tell King Manuel I about his achievement. The memory of that hot morning when he left the Portuguese capital was still very present and it was those aromas that he missed.

This departure of the Portuguese sailors for distant India was the inspiration for the new fragrance Lisboa 1497, a summery, floral scent, openly fresh and citrusy, in which the freshness of lemon, mixed with the soft, floral sweetness of linden and freesia, can be felt in the air of a flowery Lisbon in July.

Lisboa 1497 perfume opens with vibrant citrus notes of lemon, bergamot and mandarin, evolving into an aquatic floral heart in which lime blossom and orange blossom are surrounded by other aquatic notes of sea and seaweed. At the base, notes of amber, cedar and white musk sustain the fragrance in memory and heart.

Just as Vasco da Gama challenged the seas with the help of the wind rose, Lisboa 1497 is a new unisex perfume to explore!’
