This was a vessel used during the Age of Discovery, in the 15th and 16th centuries. It was a ship adapted to exploration, fast and used as a defence resource for some fleets. Caravels were medium-sized, 20 to 30 metres long and weighing between 43 and 69 tonnes. They usually had two masts with Latin sails (triangular sails), while larger vessels could have three masts. Because their sails were triangular, they were able to sail in a zigzag pattern, even in contrary winds. They were painted with the symbol of the Cross of Christ, in honour of the Order of Christ. Portuguese originated with the Arabs because of the fishing boats in the south of Portugal.
