 A large ship used essentially on long-distance routes, particularly to India and Brazil in the 15th century. The earliest ships had a mast and a spar with a rounded deck and topmast, just like other vessels, but with larger dimensions. At the time of King Ferdinand, ships developed in nautical terms and multiplied considerably in Portugal. Due to the piracy that plagued the Portuguese coast and the national effort to create an armada to combat it, ships were also used in the navy. The ship's transport capacity also increased, reaching 200 tonnes by the 15th century, and in the following century its tonnage would reach 500 tonnes.
