Precious Stones in the Portuguese Crown Jewels

Precious stones are a fundamental part of the value and history of the Portuguese Crown Jewels. In this masterclass, the gemmologist Dr Rui Galopim de Carvalho offers an introduction to the study of the gemstones found in the jewellery pieces of the Royal Treasury, exploring the specific challenges involved in their identification and characterisation in objects of great historical, artistic and heritage value.

Taking a technical yet accessible approach, the session will highlight some of the challenges gemmology faces in a museum context, as well as examples of particular scientific and heritage interest. The session will also reveal the stories and findings of the gemmological study carried out in 2020 on the more than 22,000 gemstones that make up the Royal Treasury Museum’s collection, shedding light on lesser-known aspects of this important heritage collection.

The theoretical component will be complemented by a guided tour of the Royal Treasury Museum, during which the knowledge gained will be explored in greater depth through direct observation of some of the items on display.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Participants must pass through a metal detector arch at the entrance to the Royal Treasury Museum.
Small bags will be screened using X-ray equipment.
Larger bags must be placed in the lockers provided at the entrance, next to the shop.
We recommend arriving 15 minutes before the start of the masterclass.
Participation is subject to prior registration and is limited to 20 participants.
